The youngest MP spent the weekend in detention in the capital, Harare.

The case against her could make her face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) condemns the arrest of Hon Joanna Mamombe which they describe as nothing but an act of political persecution. The young law maker is also accused of allegedly asking her constituents to support anti-government protests.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa accused the Western powers of engineering the protests to oust his government, which has so far raise Police arrest to over 1,000 people.

The MDC in their statement said that: Hon Mamombe is not a criminal, the MDC is a team of law-abiding transformers whose sole agenda is to create an opportunity for prosperity to the people of Zimbabwe. Criminals who are abusing public funds for personal gain including buying cars using state funds are walking freely while those who fight for the democratization of Zimbabwe are persecuted. The MDC is concerned by the abuse of law enforcement institutions and the Justice delivery system. We are also concerned by the unnecessary raising of tension in a place where a conducive environment for dialogue must be created.
