Former Chelsea Captain - John Terry, has admitted that he still wake up at nights over the penalty miss that cost Chelsea the Champions League title against Manchester United in 2008.

The former England international slipped as he stepped up to take a spot-kick that would have sealed the club’s first European title in Moscow.

Speaking during an Instagram Q&A, the ex-Chelsea captain said: ‘No I haven’t [got over it]. I don’t think I ever will.

‘Even still today I wake up in the middle of the night and go “oh why?” Two or three in the morning. I’ve had so many highs but that one thing just irritates you. ‘You can never get it back, that opportunity. It’s something, Chelsea aspired to win the Champions League for years, it was the one trophy we wanted.

‘Missing the penalty that led to that still breaks my heart now. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. ‘Even at the time, two days after that we had to meet up with England. We played America at home five days later. Two days later we met up with the Man Utd players were good as gold at the time but I just didn’t want to face the world, I was heart-broken, I was shot to bits. ‘Then we played a game five days later, we won 1-0 and I scored a header from outside the box and the night I just broke down completely. I was like, how can I score a header from outside the box but miss a penalty? ‘It really got to me. But on the flip side, it made me even more determined to go on and achieve what I done.’
