Remembering the sweet tunes of Sir Victor Uwaifo as flags fly at half-mast






All flags at the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) House in Lagos are now flying at half-mast in celebration of the life of Nigerian music icon, Sir Victor Uwaifo, who passed on last Saturday, aged 80.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by COSON Chairman, Tony Okoroji, on Monday.






“All flags at COSON House in Ikeja, the headquarters of COSON, Nigeria’s biggest copyright collective management organisation, are now flying at half-mast.

“This is in celebration of the life of the great composer, lyricist, melody maker, multi-instrumentalist, sculptor, designer, performer per excellence and intellectual giant, Prof. Victor Uwaifo.


“A condolence register has also been opened at the reception of COSON House for all those who want to pay tribute to the memory of this unique artiste,” he said.

Victor Efosa Uwaifo MON was a Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor, University lecturer, music legend, and the first Honorable Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Nigeria.








Uwaifo Peter The Rock, his nephew broke the news on his Uncle on Saturday evening. Uwaifo Peter, who is a gospel artiste and multi-instrumentalist, wrote:

“Daddy whyyyyyyyyyy. Did you leave us now

Prof sir Victor UWAIFO has gone to rest

Black Saturday for me now.


One week now after collaborating with me.”




The late singer featured in a track titled “Hallelujah” with his nephew just some days back.






Peter de Rock said: “Everybody calls me Sir Victor Uwaifo’s son because I took after him, but he is actually my uncle. We were very close. I am popularly known as Uwaifo junior.


The ‘Guitar boy’ as he was fondly called celebrated his 80th birthday in March.







The President of Nigeria who laud his achievements - believes the renowned musician with global appeal and recognitions lived for many firsts; which include an invitation to the State House by four presidents and heads of state, also - winner of a gold disc in Africa for his song: ‘Joromi’, released in 1965 at the age of 24.
