Legendary Nigerian music star - Onyeka Onwenu has passed on according to reports.
The iconic Nigerian singer and songwriter whose music and face is reckoned with in the 80s and 90s, has passed on.
Onwenu was reported to have slumped after performing at the birthday party of Mrs Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals on Tuesday night in Lagos.
The 72 year old was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was pronounced dead.
According to an eye witness, after performing on stage the iconic singer walked back to her seat, where she slumped. Emergency services were quickly called in.
Born on 31st January 1952, she began her music career in 1981 while still with the NTA, releasing the album For the Love of You, a pop album which featured an orchestral cover of Johnny Nash’s “Hold Me Tight”, produced by Berkley Jones. Her second album was Endless Life, produced by Sonny Okosun, and included another cover – the Everley Brothers’ “Walk Right Back”. Both records were released under the EMI label.
However, Onwenu’s first album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, which was recorded in London, was released in 1984. It featured the track “Masterplan” written by close friend Tyna Onwudiwe.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Onwenu was known for hit songs such as “You and I”, “Wait for Me” (which she did with legendary juju artiste King Sunny Ade) “Iyogogo” and “Dancing in the Sun.”
