The federal government of Nigeria in a bid to win the stand still between them and ASUU has taken the drive to weaken the influence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday, by registering two unions in the university system.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, who spoke while presenting the certificates of registration to the two unions explained that the two bodies will exist alongside ASUU.
The latest move by the minister and government may be as a result of the recent collapse of talk between himself and the President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke.

The Nigerian government has presented certificates of registration to the two academic unions of universities (Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics <NAMDA> and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics <CONUA>).
The development is the latest ploy by the government to bring the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to its knees over the almost eight-month-old industrial action.
“These associations will exist side by side with ASUU in Nigerian universities,” said Mr Ngige, citing the ILO convention.
He advised the newly registered academic unions not to interfere with the activities of the university management and the governing council.
According to him, ASUU is interfering with the rights of employers by insisting that the University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS) be adopted as a payment platform for its members.
ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022.
